The Swami Golf GPS review

Swami Golf GPS - Now is the time to change.
I just got my package today and quickly tore the Swami Golf GPS out of its box and went straight to the club. After a few rounds and clubbing later, I would say I'm impressed. I'm just a regular laser ranger type of guy and was albeit reluctant at first to use GPS. The only reason I decided to give this a try is because of the price. It's way below the norm, in fact, I would say its dirt cheap. Izzo's website tagged this GPS at 99 dollars, but if you searched harder, you'll find a much lower price. I found mine here at a Golf GPS review site. you can also read a whole lot of information and other golfer's feedback at that site regarding the Izzo.
To begin with, the Izzo Swami trim down on features that the people at Izzo think is unnecessary and leave with the 'bare essential' of a Golf GPS. They have two purpose in mind when they came up with the design. The first is to cut down on the price by managing a simple set of features that is 100 % likely to use on an average day in the green. and the second is to build a simple GPS that can be easily be used even for the uninitiated.
With LCD display almost as large as the unit itself, senior golf members are more likely to be impressed with those big numbers clearly seen anytime of the day. The four buttons typifies how simple it is to use the Swami. No more fudging over the menu screen for complex data display. I would say that the Izzo is by far, the simplest, most lightweight GPS to hit the market today.
According to Izzo, the New SIRFStar III chip is designed to accurately and quickly recognize courses upon powering up. Calling this Insta-lok technology, this chip can zero in as fast as 5 seconds on a given course. This is a great feature to have as it decrease the amount of time looking for it manually in the menus.
One thing about the Izzo Swami Golf GPS that excite me is that it has a very long battery life. I'm not sure why I'm more enthusiastic with this attribute of the Swami than that of the others but for me, playing without having to worry that the unit will go dead in the middle of the gameplay and also not having to worry about the battery needing to be recharged every a few hours or so is a major relief for me. And the reason is pretty obvious, too. with a calculator type of display, this unit does not hog resources like a full scale Golf GPS with large full color LCD do.
So, do I regret the fact that I traded my inseeker for this? Hell, no. I would trade it with two Bushnell anytime of the day. If I wasn't seduced by the price, and hence the posibility of me trying a GPS, I would defend my laser rangefinder to the ground. Nothing can be more advanced and techy to me than a Luke Skywalker Laser Ranger. Just point the thing in whatever direction you desire and you got a quick reading. Except, of course, would you please move that boulder out of my ranger's sight?
Currently, I'm satisfied with the ten courses inside my Swammi Golf GPS. But for those who play on a ton of courses, an overwhelming number, 12,000 according to the GPS manufacturer, is readily available for download. Thats more than enough to cover all the bases within the year. but what about the upcoming new courses? Again, we turn to our only reliable source for information, Izzo for information. Izzo the company has been known to be a top producer and innovator of golf bags, but what about GPS? they are still fairly new to the scene and their usual product tends to upset their new line of product. I mean, Golf bags is far out of league with the Golf GPS. I could understand if they are moving to a nearer related product like golf shirts or even a golf cart but venturing into a distant category might or might not prove its undoing. With that said, we could only wait and see if the company do live to is expectations..
On a side note, for those of you who are still in doubt, you can find golf GPS rentals to try this baby out but, just like I mentioned earlier, it is so dirt cheap that you can just not resist the price. If you have already a more sophisticated GPS at hand, the Izzo is a great second backup GPS.

Hi Stacey, nice article you have here. glad that you are a gps fan now. it will surely improve your game!
With prices coming down, I would check out the skycaddie 2.5 for just around 100 dollars more.
Nathaniel, Last time I checked the skycaddie is being phased out. could anyone verify this? tnx

this is a nice review. I Think that laser rangeseekers are more prone to errors and constant realigning of the range to get the best possible calculations.
